The Holy Grail. Legend? Myth?  Analogy for the crusade we as drummers experience when we seek out our perfect sound? That perfect snare? That perfect ride cymbal? It’s time to get philosophical.

 

As a drummer, the satisfaction, the pleasure and the thrill of finding that perfect sounding instrument you cherish and love is something hard to compare. It’s also something hard to give up. Often, we are wrapt in the thrilling ride and consistent pleasure of the sound we love, that we forget about the needs of the music. The instrument we love becomes used in all music situations. We loath to stray. When we do this we rob the music of it’s Holy Grail, the harmony between the music being played and the right instrument to produce it. 

 

Is your quest for the sound you want or the sound you need? As your ability and skill evolves so too does your knowledge of the musics requirements as well as your own.

 

So it seems the Holy Grail is a chalice of many faces. Somewhere, out there, there are endless combinations of instruments and music that are perfectly married.
